Seeing the great potential, the owner thought why not process it into finished goods first before being exported because it creates great added value for Indonesia.
“Seeing that there were still many raw rattan exports carried out by Indonesian companies at that time, Dr. Hendra Adidarma intended to create the idea of a paint company for the furniture industry. Because at that time, paint companies in Indonesia only focused on two industrial segments, namely automotive and household (wall paint),” Yuwono said to Construction Media when visited at his office located on Jl. Gatot Subroto KM.8 Tangerang, Banten, Monday (29/8/2022).
Right in 1988 or 1989, he said, the government also set regulations that indirectly benefited Propan Raya where rattan and furniture entrepreneurs did not export raw wood or rattan, but made finished goods first before exporting.
Knowing that there is a ban on the export of raw wood, wood producers are competing to make processed wood to be used as furniture such as benches, beds, cabinets, and so on. Yuwono said, Propan Raya is the only paint company that is ready to answer the needs of rattan and wood painting.
“Dr. Hendra Adidarma saw that the furniture exported before painting was very cheap, but after painting, the price of the furniture increased fantastically. Since then, the furniture craftsmen have done the final painting before exporting,” said Yuwono.
He said there is an opportunity for processed wood furniture that has not been ‘polished’ to get a high price when exported. For this reason, he said, Dr. Hendra Adidarma initiated before the furniture was exported, painting was carried out first, so that the value of the furniture increased.
Along with the development, Dr. Hendra Adidarma conducted job competency training by starting through job training centers. The workers are trained and understand the high added value if the finishing is good.
“Since then, Greater Propan has experienced fantastic growth, like a rocket. Because of the innovations made by Dr. Hendra Adidarma, he developed paints for other industries, one of which is the construction sector such as metal protective paints, flooring polymer paints, and others,” said Yuwono.
So it can be said that the beginning of the history of Propan paint is the first wooden paint for furniture needs in Indonesia and has developed into one of the largest paint manufacturers in Indonesia.
“Thanks to Dr. Hendra Adidarma’s foresight to see this opportunity, Propan Raya has developed and has its own production plant that can meet the needs of paints in Indonesia. Even the main raw material for making the paint, Propan Raya also produces its own through the Propan Group,” said the man who graduated from Civil Engineering at Parahyangan University Bandung (Unpar).
Propan Raya until now has a central warehouse and distributor center in several areas, also has as many as 39 branches and as a storage location.
“We also have 6 distributor location points, Propan Service Center as many as 17 points, Propan Inspiration Center as many as 5 points, and 1 Propan Sandimas Home Center spread across Indonesia. Propan Service Center, Propan Inspiration Center, and Propan Sandimas Home Center are like Propan’s own stores, only selling Propan products and can be used as training places. In addition, we also have 1,800 paint point machines spread throughout the paint shops in Indonesia. It’s to guarantee our excellent operation,” he reiterated.
In addition, thanks to the hard work done by Propan Raya in producing paints in Indonesia, his party has also bagged various kinds of certificates. One of them is a certificate that regulates against the environment.
The Indonesian National Standard Certificate (SNI) and the 2019 Green Label Indonesia (GLI) certificate are based on the Certification Decree number 92 / IAPMO / VI / 2019 issued by PT IAPMO Group Indonesia on June 20, 2019, while the GLI certificate was obtained based on decree number 001 / CHM / SK-GLI / I / 2018 issued by the Green Product Council Indonesia on June 25, 2019.
PT IAPMO Group Indonesia decided to provide SNI certificates in accordance with SNI 3564:2014 and ISO 9001:2015. Then, Green Product Council Indonesia also decided to give a GLI certificate to PT Propan Raya with a “Gold” rating for 5 (five) wall paint products, including Decorcryl, Decorshield, Decorsafe, Decorflex, and Eco Emulsion.
This assessment is based on the results of a type 5 certification scheme that combines the assessment of the management system production process based on ISO 9000: 2015 (quality management system) with product testing.
Testing is not only carried out to test the quality of the product, but concerns the entire process, starting from the designed goods, the materials used, how the manufacturing process is, until the goods can be received by the customer.
For product quality, materials to the manufacturing process must be safe from the environment, and do not contain harmful materials, such as heavy metals, apeo, biocid, low VOCs and so on. In line with the material, the packaging must also be heavy metal free.
Propan Raya also in 2011, successfully obtained the Singapore Green Label Certificate certificate from The Singapore Green Labelling Scheme (SGLS).
Different Paints, Different Designations
In fact, the need to paint the walls or walls of a building or residential house for indoor and outdoor purposes is very different. Moreover, the expertise of workers in applying the paint also greatly determines the quality of the object’s painting results.

“Also for paint purposes for hospitals and malls (modern shopping centers), shophouses and other buildings are different. All of that cannot be confused,” said Yuwono.

He said that buildings on the beach must use anti-corrosion paint so that the safety and durability of the paint can be maintained. In addition, Yuwono said, you must pay attention to paint appointers. Because if you don’t, the final result will greatly affect the quality and durability of the paint itself.
“It’s useless that the paint is good but if you apply it carelessly, the final result will look bad. For this reason, the painting applicator must be equipped with knowledge before starting painting both on the outer and inner walls of a building,” said Yuwono said.
For this reason, he said, Propan is wrong or a company that is very concerned about the application of paint carried out by workers. Because the owner is aware that the knowledge of workers in the paint field is still very minimal.
“The owner (Dr. Hendra Adidarma) of our time at the time of founding Propan really cared about workers in painting appropriately, so that the lifetime or durability of the paint quality would be very maximum,” said Yuwono.
For this reason, he said, Human Resources (HR) in Indonesia, especially for the application of paint, must be further improved and Propan has a program that is being run in conducting training or training for the community and construction workers.
“I think knowledge in terms of painting is very important, so that we are not wasteful or wrong in choosing paint for the desired needs,” he said.
